The quarrel between the Queen Mother and Princess Amalie continues. Her Majesty has now forbidden that her kitchen should continue to supply the princess with meals. Now the Princess must either invite herself to other tables or grill chicken at her fireplace. Thus, she asks me to hire a cook for her. One sees that the great ones are as prone to human weakness as the lowest mortals.

OMG. Welp. Was this before that epic "who was worse??" family battle? Cause if this was before I can totally see why Amalie dug in her heels. (I seem to remember you saying it was after. In which case I can see why Heinrich made up with her. :P )

Lehndorff records the rumor that she's had an illegitimate child which she has cut into pieces and burned in the fireplace and immediately adds that this at least is a lie

...I am never going to get tired of Lehndorff being super over the top, am I. (Also never going to stop boggling at Editor and his "oh, it was Normal for men to be totally emo like that!")

Oh FRITZ. Mildred, was this the fat-shaming you referred to earlier? I didn't realize it also was the only thing he said to her after not seeing her for seven years! I feel like that gives it a whole new level of WTF.

It was before, because SD died in 1757, and the family reunion, complete with "who was worse?" battle, was in the 1770s.

Yes, it was, and yes, it was the only thing he said to her, and sorry, if I didn't mention that, I totally should have! Because yes, that's what makes it so over-the-top. Simply commenting that someone has put on weight in a fat-shaming way, while not ideal, is not exactly something I would have criticized 18C Fritz for. Showing up after seven years and saying that publicly, as the *only* thing you say...Fritz, I'll excuse you a lot when it comes to your unwanted marriage, but this really was gratuitous cruelty (unlike most of what people consider your cruelty to her that I don't). Please go back to ignoring her.

You may well have mentioned that at some point and I just forgot! At any rate I only registered the fat-shaming part, and I was like, well, OK, that's not great, but I wonder why mildred thought it was so awful. ...I guess I know now!

No, I looked up the comment where I shared that tidbit, and sure enough, I did not at all mention the part where it was the only thing he said to her after 7 years, and it was public, and people noticed and took notes. So you were absolutely right to wonder.
