As usual I have a more conventional reveal post up, but mostly I am DYING to talk about Some Desperate Glory backstory in general and Corporal Lin in particular, especially with [personal profile] cenozoicsynapsid and [personal profile] hamsterwoman but everyone else too please!!

(My other post about it was here (massive spoilers) and of course feel free to comment there too... there is clearly a straight line from there to the fics to this post.)

I now have even more feelings about the book, Corporal Lin, and Avicenna too, than I had before. If you are interested in reading either fic, do that first because this contains spoilers for both. )

[personal profile] rachelmanija just reminded me that although the Chocolate Box exchange isn't running this year, the Candy Hearts exchange ([personal profile] candyheartsex) is instead, and nominations close tomorrow (in a little less than 24 hours from this posting). (This exchange is sort of like Trick or Treat, but relationship focused (either & or /, does not need to be romantic), 300-word minimum.)

I'm not sure I'm going to do it (I only barely got my Yuletide assignment in) buuuut it can't hurt to nominate, right? I'll try to do this tomorrow morning (for me). I think we get 10 nominations per fandom?

In B5, I will try to nominate
-Delenn/Neroon
-Delenn & Neroon
-Neroon & Branmer
-Lochley & Sheridan
-Lochley & Zoe
...this leaves me a bunch more slots, any requests?

In 18th C, I'll try to nominate
Voltaire & Fritz
Voltaire/Fritz
Heinrich & Fritz
Fritz/Fredersdorf
Fritz/Katte
...and??

And, idk, maybe some opera? Maybe Renato/Amelia <3 Suggestions?

aaaaaah RL is a thing (work deadline, parents coming to visit) but before I possibly fall off the world for a week I should talk about my lovely RMSE presents because I know they are relevant to some of your interests :D They are so different and I love them a lot!

My gift is 18th-C Frederician RPF and is the hilarious Corporate AU I have always wanted! Frederick the Great as the energetic micromanaging boss/CEO who is always coming up with terrible ideas to inflict on his minions! Heinrich (in canon his brother, and in both canon and AU my problematic fave) as the hypercompetent longsuffering engineer who... also just happens to be Just Like Fritz! I think this is readable without canon knowledge (though of course better if you do know all the references). In particular, if you have ever worked for That Boss... you will understand :D

Summary:

Relaxing can be tough, whether you're the workaholic CEO or the ambitious engineer trying to climb the corporate ladder. Luckily, both Frederick and Henry's boyfriends are up to the challenge.

"I told you, I don't need therapy, I write poetry!"

In which Henry has sex, Frederick has dogs, and everyone has a coffee mug.

My treat (which I suspect one of you wrote -- if not, someone basically read my mind about all the things I love) is Tillerman saga! Horace Greene / Brother Thomas ! A pairing I had never ever even thought of before it showed up in the tagset, but then I started really wanting it and wanting to know what it might say about the series' themes about family and love: as the Professor says, what love does with us, what we do with love. And this lovely story goes into all of that, and also portrays Brother Thomas's faith in such a meaningful way. And how all happy families are different! (I love, love, love that Horace and Thomas find a way to a family and a life that still understand and interwine with the importance of his vows to God). And just so, so gorgeously written <3 (If it's not one of you, maybe it was Voigt who wrote it? :) )

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Tillerman Cycle - Cynthia Voigt
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Brother Thomas/Horace Greene (Tillerman Cycle)
Characters: Brother Thomas (Tillerman Cycle), Horace Greene (Tillerman Cycle)
Additional Tags: Falling In Love, Pining, Religion, Vow of Chastity Still in Play
Summary:

Thomas liked him: his barely acknowledged sense of humor, his near-absence of ego, his stubbornness, his devotion to the thoroughly unfashionable, the depth and sincerity of his scholarship. He knew some of the men who moved in and out of their whist game found Horace hard to like. In Thomas’s opinion, they looked for flash and missed substance: all that is gold does not glitter.

Finally digging myself out and hopefully will be able to post again (I'm way behind in Hugo-reading posting, for starters), but first!

[personal profile] cenozoicsynapsid and [personal profile] hamsterwoman and I were talking about Sarah Gailey's story STET, as one does, and our critiques of it, and I made the throwaway comment "Heh, now I'm wondering about writing the story where the editor itself is an AI, which would neatly solve the problem of the editor being clueless in that particular human-emotional-subtext way," and then [personal profile] cenozoicsynapsid took that and ran with it and made it into an IF story :D

You guys. It's SO GOOD! If you didn't like STET (I know a lot of you had the same problems with it that I had), you should totally read this story. If you did like STET (which [personal profile] cenozoicsynapsid did, in fact, though in large part because they gave Gailey rather more credit than I did for a nuanced viewpoint), you should also totally read this story! If you haven't read the story, the original story is short and you should read it and then read the fic! (well, mind the content note and don't read if that would bother you, of course.)

The IF can be made extremely short and is still good, although the more you click around the more interesting it is. It's heartbreaking, and quite chilling in its look at an all-too-plausible near-future, and also somehow manages to have a distinct sense of humor at the same time.

I am just unutterably pleased that this story exists in the world :D

Content note: non-graphic death of children and animals (at the same level as in the original story).

Of course I'm doing these instead of the work I'm totally behind on *facepalm*

Let me know if anyone wants me to nominate more characters or groupings. or if there's a request I should make, if this means you will write or draw me a treat :D You can see that in most cases I am just going to request one or two things, so I am totally willing to give up some of these slots if someone prefers something else.

I'm also willing to give up a fandom slot or two if someone comes up with something else I've forgotten :D

Turandot: Liu, Turandot, Calaf, Emperor, Group: Turandot & Liu (will request: Turandot & Liu)

Der Ring des Nibelungen: Loge, Sieglinde, Brunnhilde, Wotan, Freia, Fricka, Group: Brunnhilde & Sieglinde (will either request B&S or any)

Guuuuuuys I found out from [personal profile] el_staplador about [community profile] blackboxexchange, a fic and art exchange (art!! psst [personal profile] simonboccanegra) for theatre and musicals and opera and ballet!! HOW EXCITED AM I? THIS EXCITED. THIS EXCITED WITH CAPITAL LETTERS.

I have sooooo many things I want to nominate!! In no particular order:
-Turandot
-Die Walkure
-All the Verdi (or at least Ballo in Maschera, Simon Boccanegra, La Forza del Destino)
-Pelleas et Melisande
-Don Carlos (Schiller)
-Les Contes d'Hoffman
-La Clemenza di Tito
-La Traviata

...I don't even have room for Eugene Onegin and Don Carlos (Verdi) or Gilbert and Sullivan or musicals!! Ahhhhh musicals are a whole other thing that I want!

eeeeee I made the kids listen to opera in the car with me all day today (they didn't care, they were reading their books) :D

writing operafic is great because one doesn't actually have to get any history right, one can totally make it up

Also, are there any operas I should watch between now and signups (or possibly now and nominations)? :D (Ideally ones I can get free or from Met on Demand.)

Also also, does anyone have a good Aida they recommend? The Aida I watched (recent Met) had Netrebko, who's always good, but everyone else was kind of... boring.
