Last WoT post for a while, probably (I know there are two more episodes, but probably not going to watch them until after Christmas). I observed to D that I thought it was funny that I, who have forgotten almost everything about the books, have about as much idea as to what's coming next as he does, as someone who remembers in great detail what happens in the books.
Although he did spoil the Siuan-Moiraine alliance to me, so that was not a surprise (which I kind of wish it had been). (Yes, I forgot even that, although once he told me I remembered, so I might have remembered before the show reveal by myself -- but probably not.)
-I really liked the cold open about Siuan's childhood.
-I continue to absolutely love the Aes Sedai and how they're this whole society of powerful women that politick and have alliances and strategems and everything.
-I loved seeing the Aes Sedai we'd already seen and meeting more.
-I had read a bunch of speculation about Siuan/Moiraine being more of a thing so that also wasn't super surprising to me, but I really liked that too.
-I also just in general like that this show is much closer to my tolerance for on-screen sex and violence than GoT was.
-I love the Moiraine/Lan bond (and did in the books too), I loved their scene where he's like "so, masking me, huh?"
-the bit where Moiraine and Egwene bow to Siuan, and Nynaeve pointedly doesn't, was hilarious (also hilariously, D totally didn't notice this and we had to rewind it so he could see it).
-I continue to like Loial a lot!
-...why isn't Moiraine telling everyone else that they're actually in the city??
-I was SO relieved that they got the dagger out of Mat already. I remember that taking SO long in the books, like several books worth, and it was so annoying and Mat was so annoying and really a couple of episodes was about how much I was ready to put up with that. (I really feel like the showrunners have exactly the same opinions I do as to what time to spend on what, because I'm super there for them spending a ton of time on Warders and Aes Sedai and no time on this stupid dagger subplot.)
-I was really into Moiraine's little blue jewel thing, which D tells me is canon, how did I not remember that?? (that is totally the kind of thing I would remember :P )
-The bit where Moiraine has to swear on the Oath Rod... did she... just marry Siuan?? Because that is sure what it sounded like to me :P
-The reunion scene was really sweet! I guess I do like all these kids after all :P
-Moiraine: "I will be clear."
Me: If that's you being clear, then I really don't want to hear you being unclear!
-Moiraine and Lan being all communing with the horses at the end was really cute
-Man, I... do not blame Mat one bit for remaining behind. I'm kind of surprised more of them didn't jump ship, really.

I also love Moiraine & Lan. This show is hitting all my buttons for my favorite sexual and nonsexual gender configurations of intensely loyal relationships.
I feel really bad for Loial. He didn't choose any of this, and keeping him alive as an experimental subject is horrible.
I love the pedantic ogre dude and his amazing voice.

Date: 2021-12-14 04:41 pm (UTC)yes YES! ALL THE LOYALTY EVER and man I don't think I'd actually ever articulated before now that M&F nonsexual intensely loyal relationships are MY FAVE and I would like ALL OF THEM RIGHT NOW THANKS but... it's... really hard for me to think of any! Oh wait, there was Diane Lockhart and Will Gardner in The Good Wife, whom I loved intensely for the same reasons. And also long-standing intensely loyal F/F is just, like, YEAH. (Interestingly, this is hitting my buttons much more than getting-together F/F, which I like but... not as much. Maybe I just really like long-standing intensely loyal relationships in general, ha.)
I think you might be confusing Loial (pedantic ogre dude -- and yessss I agree about him and his amazing voice) and Logain? Boy, that scene where he was trying to get the Aes Sedai angry enough at him to kill him was chilling.

Yes this so much xD
(And it's not all Aes Sedai, iirc Kerene (or was it Stepin or one of the other warders?) made fun or Moraine and Lan for being so evasive.)

Date: 2021-12-14 07:11 pm (UTC)Even with the books' flaws, that is 100% why I rolled my eyes (though no braid-tug) through the library copies that I read in high school and early college. At a certain point the worldbuilding seemed too big for Jordan to hold onto and I quit reading, but I liked the Aes Sedai, pettiness and all.
