Date: 2020-04-30 10:43 pm (UTC)Haven't looked at the son and grandsons in many years, and never knew either that well (more Charlie focus for obvious reasons), I'm just thinking the guy who became a cardinal and made multiple bids for Pope* might have been on board with Grandpa's Catholicism and not considered it excessive. Charlie, in contrast, seems to have been more pragmatic and less fanatical. (When I was in fandom, his supposed conversion to Anglicanism was considered debatable and, by many of the scholars I was reading, apocryphal; Wikipedia is now telling me it seems to have actually happened.)
* Other cardinals: You think we're electing an exiled Stuart pope so you can tell all the Catholic monarchs to go to war with Great Britain on behalf of your father or brother? Ha!
