Also, that‘s an awesome summing up wonderfully reminiscent of some academic quarrels I‘ve witnessed from afar. Minus the anonymous pamphleteering. Incidentally, since during the 7 years war Maupertuis is dying in Basel (when Amalie finances his wife going there in Lehndorff‘s diary entry), I take it he left Prussia before that?

The reason I bothered to copy this in full was so we could all choke reading that last phrase. And yes, I *did* look it up and made sure it exists before trusting MacDonogh. (Everything else in this write-up could be fake, between Wikipedia, MacDonogh, and Passionate Minds, none of which is great about sources.)

Yep, apparently for health reasons.
