More Frederick the Great (henceforth "Fritz") and surrounding spinoffs history! Clearly my purpose in life is now revealed: it is to encourage
mildred_of_midgard and
selenak to talk to me about Frederick the Great and associated/tangential European history. I am having such a great time here! Collating some links in this post:
* selenak's post on Frederick the Great as a TV show with associated fandom; a great place to start for the general history
* I have given up indexing all posts, here is the tag of discussion posts. Someday when I actually have time maybe I'll do a "best of."
Some links that have come up in the course of this discussion (and which I am putting here partially for my own benefit because in particular I haven't had time to watch the moviesbecause still mainlining Nirvana in Fire):
Fritz' sister Wilhelmine's tell-all tabloidy memoirs (English translation); this is Part I; the text options have been imperfectly OCR'd so be aware of that (NOTE 11-6-19: THIS IS A BOWDLERIZED TEXT, I WILL COME BACK WITH A BETTER LINK)
Part II of Wilhelmine's memoirs (English translation)
A dramatization of Frederick the Great's story, English subtitles
Mein Name ist Bach, Movie of Frederick the Great and J.S. Bach, with subtitles Some discussion of the subtitles in the thread here (also scroll down)
2017 miniseries about Maria Theresia, with subtitles and better translation of one scene in comments
ETA:
Miniseries of Peter the Great, IN ENGLISH, apparently reasonably historically solid
ETA 10-22-19
Website with letters from and to Wilhelmine during her 1754/1755 journey through France and Italy, as well as a few letters about Wilhelmine, in the original French, in a German translation, and in facsimile
University of Trier site where the full works of Friedrich in the original French and German have been transcribed, digitized, and uploaded:
30 volumes of writings and personal correspondence
46 volumes of political correspondence
Fritz and Wilhelmine's correspondence (vol 27_1)
ETA 10-28-19
Der Thronfolger (German, no subtitles; explanation of action in the comment here)
ETA 11-6-19
Memoirs of Stanisław August Poniatowski, dual Polish and French translation
ETA 1-14-20
Our Royal Librarian Mildred has collated some documentation, including google translate versions of the Trier letters above (see the "Correspondence" folder)!

Date: 2019-09-19 09:09 pm (UTC)...We'll have to do an evidence post. But I think that's fine. Worst thing that happens is that they split it up into Young Fritz & Friends and Older Fritz & Enemies (or whatever)

Date: 2019-09-20 03:59 pm (UTC)Also, let's note down the nominations so far:
self: either Voltaire or Catherine depending whom Mildred doesn't take, Anna Carolina Orzelska (outside/inside pov, and interesting no matter what did or did not happen between her and Fritz), Sophia Dorothea and... drumroll… Fredersdorf (he did meet Fritz relatively briefly after Katte's death, after all, so should come in handy for H/c scenarios).
Re: Yuletide ideas and the Other Royal Murder Dad
Date: 2019-09-20 04:28 pm (UTC)Catherine vs. Voltaire doesn't matter to me either way, especially if we're just dividing them between us. I can take Catherine and you can take Voltaire?
If we weren't limited to 4, my other choices would be Algarotti, and, um, Fritz's dogs. :P
Of course, the best part of all this is that FW has been dropped like a hot potato. :D
Re: Yuletide ideas and the Other Royal Murder Dad
Date: 2019-09-21 05:53 am (UTC)Okay, Voltaire it is! Am now really curious whether there will be Fritz/Voltaire frenemy stuff. Ideally, we could tempt someone who's an expert in Voltaire, which I'm decidedly not, alas.

(Once more with log in. I have no idea why I Keep getting de-logged!)
Re: Yuletide ideas and the Other Royal Murder Dad
Date: 2019-09-21 06:19 am (UTC)More or less agree, and also he doesn't need to be on screen, so I wouldn't necessarily want him as a character. Plus I think it's possible to write a Fritz/Katte getting-to-know-each-other fic or a PWP or something without even alluding to FW. Let them be happy for an hour!
Yay for getting our nominations sorted. \o/
Re: Yuletide ideas and the Other Royal Murder Dad
Date: 2019-09-20 04:42 pm (UTC)Last year's post is here and you can get a flavor of it:
https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/55143.html
I think the possible issues that might be iffy here (and the reason why we should probably make a post) are that a) mods might not understand what "18th Century Frederician RPF" means (er, since we, or you, kind of made it up, though I agree that is absolutely the correct way to go about it) and b) to argue that all these people (e.g., Voltaire, Catherine, Maria Theresia) do fall under that umbrella even though to someone who doesn't know any of the history *two-months-ago-me raises hand* the set of characters may sound kind of eclectic).

Date: 2019-09-28 09:11 pm (UTC)Fandom: 18th Century CE Frederician RPF
Possible issue with the fandom: May not be clear what "Frederician" entails
Why this fandom should be considered eligible: The word "Frederician" is meant to relate to Frederick the Great (Friedrich II) of Prussia, by analogy with "Elizabethan" or "Georgian"; we felt this would be simpler and easier than "Frederick the Great and his associated friends, enemies and frenemies RPF."
Frederick the Great and friends have been nominated before under "Prussian 18th Century RPF," but since he interacted with not only Prussians but an international cast, including Empress Maria Theresia, Emperor Joseph II, and Voltaire (and we are interested in those particular dynamics as well as the intra-Prussian ones) we feel that this is a better descriptive fandom name for what we are nominating.
Re: Yuletide ideas and the Other Royal Murder Dad
Date: 2019-09-28 09:19 pm (UTC)I don't know if it's worth rephrasing to make it sound less like we made up the term "Frederician" to refer to Frederick the Great, because it's a thing already. We're just extending it to Yuletide RPF (go us, haha).
Nitpick: the fandom in question in preceding years seems to have been "18th Century CE Prussia RPF."

Date: 2019-10-05 06:56 am (UTC)Thank you! The category works. We may need to come back to you during tag approval depending on exactly what's nominated - and if other people have nominated overlapping categories or figures, but otherwise, this seems fine.
Of course they like us. We have a top-notch fandom. :D Good choice with "Frederician",
