Last post, along with the usual 18th-century suspects, included the Ottonians; changing ideas of conception and women's sexual pleasure; Isabella of Parma (the one who fell in love, and vice versa, with her husband's sister); Henry IV and Bertha (and Henry's second wife divorcing him for "unspeakable sexual acts"). (Okay, Isabella of Parma was 18th century.)

I have made contact with the Prussian Secret State Archive and they are digitizing Peter Keith's correspondence with Fritz for me!

!!!!

It should take 3-4 weeks, and if I did the calculations correctly (they haven't said I didn't when I submitted the form), it should be only 4 euros for the 8 pages.

Now, of course, I can't read them, and [personal profile] prinzsorgenfrei (whom I haven't heard back from, might have to try tumblr) only does German, but, I have an acquaintance from grad school who is a native speaker of French and I think specialized in manuscripts. If she doesn't have the specialization or the time to do it herself, she might be able to put me in contact with someone who does.

Anyway! What this means is we have the ability to order things from the archives, which means I am taking requests! Digitized catalog here: https://gsta.preussischer-kulturbesitz.de/

German is obviously preferable, but in 3-4 weeks I should be able to tell you if we have a point of contact for French. And we'll see what Prinzsorgenfrei has time and interest in.

Current things I'm eyeing:

* The Leining and Fredersdorf correspondence when Leining took over, including the one mentioned by the box bill project, that has bearing on whether Fredersdorf was dismissed or stepped down voluntarily.

* The Suhm and Fritz correspondence from the final St. Petersburg -> Warsaw trip, in hopes Suhm's brother's unpublished letter is in there. Because I'm annoyed with Preuss for not publishing that one, because it might actually give us some hint of what Suhm died of! Which I as a fanfic writer very much need to know.

* The Peter Keith documents from the 1730 trial. This would be expensive, but if Prinzsorgenfrei is willing to read through looking for anything that isn't in Kloosterhuis or Hinrichs, potentially very valuable.

* Peter Keith's son's correspondence from Turin as envoy. Probably not interesting, but you never know!

* Suhm's sister requesting from the Saxon court the back pay they owe her brother. I'm a Suhm stan, what can I say. :P

* That Groeben letter we've talked about ordering.

What else, guys?

These are indeed awesome news, but alas for my non existent spare time right now!

Anyway: Lehndorff's surviving papers are in Leipzig, not Berlin, so they probably don't have any of his to digitize, and Heinrich's stuff has famously been lost. However, depending on availability, I'd be generally interested in:

- Peter Keith/Knobelsdorff letters; [personal profile] felis unearthing that friendship had intrigued me last year

- do they have any Gundling letters?

And speaking of Groeben, since "The King's love could be deadly", clearing up whether Grigorii the Baltic hussar shows up anywhere but in that one envoy report would also be of interest.

Well, the archives will still be there next year! In fact, I'm not planning on placing any more orders until I've seen that this process was completed successfully and have worked out arrangements to get them translated by someone who can read them.

Alas for my ability to fulfill your requests, though!

Keith/Knobelsdorff correspondence: Everything I could find even vaguely related to Peter is already in my list. I tried searching for Knobelsdorff, to see if there was correspondence under his name that might include Peter but not by name, but there are a ton of hits for "Knobelsdorff", and I haven't sifted through all of them yet. When I narrowed by "Georg", I got only a few hits, none of which are our guy. (A lot of 16th century hits, actually--this family has been around for a while.)

Gundling: No letters, just "Die von dem kurbrandenburgischen Historiker Gundling für seine Geschichte Kurfürst Friedrichs I. aus dem Plassenburger Archiv verwendeten Urkunden, Aktenstücke etcetera" and "Materialien zur Geschichte der brandenburg-preußischen Historiographen: Ancillon - Leti Enthält: - Ancillon (Charles und Frédéric); Arnold; J. Chr. Bekmann; Carion; Cataneo; J. F. Cramer; Cuhn; Erman; G. A. von Grüneberg; Gundling; Hendreich; Hertzberg; Hübner; M. Kempe; König; Larrey; Leibniz; Leti."

Grigorii: No 18th century hits for his name, either spelled "Grigorii", "Gregorii", or "Georgii"; if he's out there, it's probably under something that doesn't specify his name, unless there's yet another spelling (entirely possible).

Note that the entire body of holdings of the archive hasn't been catalogued online yet, so there may well be stuff out there that could be found in person. Even the Groeben letter for which I have the archive signature isn't in the catalogue, though because I have the signature, I should be able to order it.

At any rate, these are all great ideas and I will keep an eye out whenever I search the holdings! And let me know if you come up with others at any point.

Update: the Prussian archive people responded with my requests to find out how many pages are in the request from Suhm's sister (8 pages) and the envoy correspondence from Peter's son (18 pages), and confirmed that my understanding of the pricing is correct, so that would be 13 euros total for both. This means ordering things should indeed be affordable.

The archives are responsive, I like it! Though I will note that they replied in German, thus confirming for the umpteenth time my experience that you cannot get by in Germany on just English, and that I do need to work on my listening comprehension once my reading comprehension is a bit better.

Eagerly awaiting the delivery of my first order, and then I will try to make translation happen, and that will govern what else I order.
