sometimes I really like my job
Nov. 15th, 2012 09:15 amThis post is brought to you by my computer being reeeeally slow to run and give me the final results I want...
1. Math WORKS. I always love it when math works!
2. Automation rocks (HI Checklist Manifesto!), and saved me from what was about to become an extended session of "Whyyyyy is X performing worse than Y when it should be the other way around?" when it became clear from the automated labeling that I had mixed up X and Y in my head. In related news, I got to tell D something he didn't know about MATLAB, something that is actually quite useful (you can easily automate legend generation). I... don't think that's ever happened before! (I think it must be a new feature in the 2007 version, because I can't imagine neither of us tried to do this before.)
3. It's amazing how much my job satisfaction depends on my physical well-being. For the past week I've felt slow, unproductive, stupid, unmotivated, really bad at my job, and wondering if maybe I'm having a midlife crisis or something. ...Turns out I had a cold, and I was being unproductive and stupid. And today I am feeling great, I solved a problem in half an hour that I was banging my head against all of yesterday afternoon (to be fair, without the work I did yesterday afternoon I wouldn't have known what the problem was, much less how to fix it), and I am shifting into panic mode because oh crap need results in two weeks, which makes me a LOT more productive.
...It's too bad that it's cold season and that if it's anything like last year, where our little petri dish brought home new germs every week or so, I'm gonna spend the next six months being stupid and slow.
