Frederick the Great, Discussion Post 30
Sep. 8th, 2021 09:52 amIn which, despite the title, I would like to be told about the English Revolution, which is yet another casualty of my extremely poor history education :P :)
Also, this is probably the place to say that RMSE opened with three Fritz-fics, all of which I think are readable with minimum canon knowledge:
The Boy Who Lived - if you knew about the doomed escape-from-Prussia-that-didn't happen and tragic death of Fritz's boyfriend Hans Hermann von Katte, you may not have known about Peter Keith, the third young man who conspired to escape Prussia -- and the only one who actually did. This is his story. I think readable without canon knowledge except what I just said here.
Challenge Yourself to Relax - My gift, I posted about this before! Corporate AU with my problematic fave, Fritz' brother Heinrich, who's still Fritz's l'autre moi-meme even in corporate AU. Readable without canon knowledge if one has familiarity with the corporate world and the dysfunctions thereof.
The Rise and Fall of the RendezvousWithFame Exchange - Fandom AU with BNF fanfic writer Voltaire, exchange mod Fritz, and the inevitable meltdown. (I wrote this one and am quite proud of the terrible physics-adjacent pun contained within.) Readable without canon knowledge if one has familiarity with fandom and the dysfunctions thereof :P

Empress Ch 17-20
Date: 2021-10-05 04:49 am (UTC)-wait Necker!! This is running into
-Goldstone does have a good point (assuming her numbers/accounting is correct) about how the deficit was so large that MA's expenditures were... not large compared to it, and also about how it was Really Really Poor Optics anyway
-How'd Goldstone do with the Affair of the Necklace? (...I did once know about that, back when Awesome French Teacher used to feed me French Revolution books, but I have sadly forgotten it all. I think, in this case, because it was grown-up enough that in middle school/early high school I really didn't entirely understand what was going on.)
-Man, poor France, them backing up the US worked out really well for the US and not so well for them (which is how I felt after watching Hamilton too)
-"It's difficult to sell the notion of an imminent financial collapse and the need for increased taxes when the people asking for the money are engaged in a suspicious number of home improvement projects." LOL! Goldstone is such a good writer!! It's such a pity she gets so biased :(
-I also think I either wasn't interested or didn't get the economics stuff in high school, like as an adult "The royal treasury ran out of money and was forced to suspend payments on all sorts of securities" makes me shiver involuntarily, whereas at the time I'm sure I read stuff like that and was like "...so what?"
-I actually assume the French Revolution stuff is reasonably accurate because there's always been more stuff in English about it than about MT or her other children (with the potential exception of Axel von Fersen) -- ?
-Welp,
-Is it really true that Mozart had an anonymous grave because he happened to die in the middle of Joseph's reforms? I had always thought it was because he was so poor when he died (probably because of watching Amadeus at an impressionable age)
-"In an eerie replication of his mother's long-ago supplication for support," -- I mean, any resemblance bewteen Leopold and MT's Hungarian presentations was probably not... completely coincidence, I imagine!
-Oh, I forgot to mention before: is it really canon that Charlotte told Sir William to marry Emma?
-Okay... so I imagine that once I/salon finds out more about Maria Carolina that Goldstone probably has done inaccurate things here too, but I didn't know any of this about Naples so this is super interesting to me anyway :)
-I have no comments about Ch 20!
Probably in the next couple of days I will finish up the book :) But I imagine I'll turn the post over before then...
