Unfortunately, there was then at Berlin a King who pursued one policy only, who deceived his enemies, but not his servants, and who lied without scruple, but never without necessity.

Date: 2023-09-12 04:31 pm (UTC)Cahn: Émilie, Voltaire, Heinrich, MT.
Self: Wilhelmine, FS, Lehndorff, Fredersdorf.
You: Suhm, Manteuffel, Peter, Fritz.
(Or you could leave out Le Diable, since if I do the tale of two envoys he'll be there anywhwere, and if I don't, no one else will write him) and instead nominate Algarotti or Katte.

Date: 2023-09-12 04:37 pm (UTC)ETA: Also, I'm hoping they keep it at 4 characters and allowing subsets, with ticky boxes, which seems to be the way the comments are leaning, at least last I checked. If they do reduce it to 3, I can give up Peter, since I already got the lovely "The Boy Who Lived" gift.

Date: 2023-09-13 04:11 pm (UTC)(NB: The current evidence post makes it look like they will prioritize people being able to write without referencing B5, so I think it might be good to make at least an effort to have at least one prompt that doesn't on the surface require knowing about original B5 canon -- easy to do if the character is "Worldbuilding," I think, and honestly I don't think that many people watched it who didn't know something about the original :) )
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-14 07:20 am (UTC)Also, I see they put up an RPF coordination post. Now on the Frederician front, between us we covered all the characters, but I'm wondering about my 16th century Habsburgs, and also, I'd love to do something Byzantine, just not sure which era.
Back to B5:trH: - which characters to nominate? I mean, Londo and Ivanova for sure, as I want more from their snarky and alcoholic team up in the face of the apocalypse, and then I would say Vir (what's HE doing in any of the verses?) and G'Kar. Since Vir is not actually in the movie, are you saying I should nominate "worldbuilding" instead of "Vir: tRH"?
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-15 05:37 am (UTC)You should totally post about 16thC Habsburgs and Byzantines on the RPF post! And also the Frederician nominations (unless you want me to do that). Which Byzantines were you thinking of? I'm not sure I even know enough to request, but I would read the heck out of any Byzantine fic :D
Yes, DoomedEarth!Londo and Ivanova sounds great, and which AU for G'Kar were you thinking? (I am planning to make the case that the characters are different, so that would naturally lead to specifying the AU in question.) And yes, worldbuilding instead of Vir:tRH... I am reasonably sure that Vir wouldn't go through since he's not in it.

Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-15 03:04 pm (UTC)(I was more concerned you were going to make a case that you might nominate FS, and he was significantly impacted by the Medici political decisions, which, well...yes, but. :P)
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-15 03:12 pm (UTC):) LOL, well, going AU and imagining FS paying a visit to Florence before Gian Gastone's death to check out his inheritance might make a fun story. If he's on his own, without MT, he might take part in some of the parties at first but (given he won't just inherit the goodies, he'll also inherit the debts) will sideeye just how much money is spent on the Ruspanti and GD pretty quickly and maybe even start investigating.
...but you know, for all the bad press he has in the Italian books and Acton, I don't think he'd have been so tactless as to show up uninvited before GG was actually dead - I mean, whatever else is true about FS, he strikes me as the type of person who likes it if people around him are at their ease, and he knows that if he shows up in Florence before GG is dead, he's going to get glares and loathing by one part and sycophantic "think of me when you becomem boss!" cozying up on the other, but it sure as hell won't be relaxing. So don't worry, I wouldn't request it. Like I said, if I request this fandom, it's boing to be Marguerite Louise or bust.
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-18 12:55 am (UTC)In fact, the only AO3 fic to feature GG, "Succession", which both you and I have read and kudosed, includes GG, GD, Fritz, Katte, Wilhelmine, MT, and FS! But that's a specifically a pan-European fic that I submit is "difficult" to write (at least on demand for a fic exchange), and the mods want to go for narrower categories anyway.
In any case, they said they would approve it, so we're good! I just do wish someone would nominate Marguerite Louise, Cosimo III, Anna Maria Luisa, Violante Beatrice, and Anna Maria Franziska, and write fic, and we could get this dysfunctional fandom off the ground!
On another note, you're planning on requesting Fredersdorf and doing your usual "any character or combination of characters" thing, right? Asking for a friend who's trying to decide whether to sign up.
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-18 09:25 am (UTC)Secondly, yes, Fredersdorf will be among my requested characters, given all the transcribing you did and the translating I did this year involving his correspondence during the last year of his life which introduced us to new people and scenarios, and I'll go for any combination again.
Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-21 03:42 am (UTC)Yes, I might ask.
(Cosimo is kind of the FW here in that he's almost inevitable in any scenario that involves either GG's pre-rulership time (i.e. most of his life) or most of Marguerite Louise's life, but unless you want to write about Cosimo's own childhood and/or his Grand Tour when everyone embarasses him by congratulating him on what the Medici did for Galilei, I don't think he needs to be nominated on his own.)
I disagree, in that I haven't written a single Fritz fic in which FW got tagged, and I think it would be incredibly easy to write a GG fic that didn't include Cosimo. Cosimo was *influential*, but that's not the same thing as "appearing in the fic." GG spent most of his life avoiding his father to the best of his ability! So if someone specifically wanted to request "GG and Cosimo" or "ML and Cosimo" or "Ferdinando and Cosimo", they would want him nominated. You could, for instance, write the story of the time GG left Prague, after his marriage failed, and went to Paris to visit ML, and ML didn't particularly want to see him. (One of those cases where I understand 100% how the forced marriage and probable marital rape affected her, and also how the total parental rejection affected GG. I love fandoms where everyone's dysfunction is understandable!)
That said, what are the odds that anyone other than me and maybe you are going to request in this fandom? Slim, so we couuld certainly do without Cosimo in nominations.
Secondly, yes, Fredersdorf will be among my requested characters, given all the transcribing you did and the translating I did this year involving his correspondence during the last year of his life which introduced us to new people and scenarios, and I'll go for any combination again.
Excellent, excellent. My friend will be pleased.

Oh, question: if someone requests Fritz/Katte, and if you were participating in Yuletide, you could conceivably write this, yes?

Re: Exchanges
Date: 2023-09-15 11:39 am (UTC)Byzantium: my problem is that there are so many interesting scenarios and people. I was briefly thinking of nominating the "History of Byzantium" podcast as a fandom, which would allow me to ask for historical figures who are centuries apart, but I doubt that will wash? However, it occured to me I could narrow it down by calling it something like "Byzantine Empresses RPF", and then I could ask for cneturies apart ladies like Theodora (the most famous one of that name), Irene, Theophano the innkeeper's daughter (Lady Macbeth or Scapegoat? Fanfic writer decides!) and Theophanu the HRE Empresss (here I am a bit cheating, but she's an Empress, and she's from Byzantium!). What do you think?

Disappointing, but they're not wrong. (Though I think JMS had intended it to be able to be experienced by a new viewer who hadn't seen original B5, I think he didn't succeed in that.)
