Look, I, m, believe in live and let live. (And in not going on my travels again. Had enough of that to last a life time.) Why can't everyone else around me be more chill? Instead, my wife refuses to employ my girlfriend, my girlfriend won't budge and accept another office, my brother is set on a course to piss off everyone (he WILL go on his travels again), and my oldest kid shows signs of wanting my job which is just not on, sorry to say. And don't get me started about Mom (thank God she's living abroad). What am I doing wrong? AITA?

LOL and Dangeau writing both sides of the correspondence. Cahn, Louise de la Vallière was the mistress whom according to Versailles gossip Louis originally feigned being interested in to distract people from his flirtation with his sister-in-law, Minette, whose friend and lady-in-waiting Louise was, but then fell for her for real. She‘s also the heroine of the third Musketeers novel, where Athos‘ adopted son falls for her, and then Louis does. Unfortunately, Louise de la Vallière in turn became replaced by her Friend Athenais de Montespan, not least because Athenais was famous for her barbed wit whereas Louise‘s nickname at court was „the dew“ because of her tendency to tears.

ROTFLOL about the abbot‘s shipping manifesto. Well, not so much if you‘re Liselotte and blame Maintenon for Louis‘ increasingly hardcore Catholicism and kicking the Huguenots out. Our Lehndorff wasn‘t a fan, either, as he noted after having read the fake memoirs of Madame de Maintenon‘s which were making the rounds for a while.
