However, one couldn't trust him. For often the musicians, upon noticing he'd fallen asleep, skipped several arias in order to finish earlier. No sooner did they try that he opened his eyes and called "But you're leaving something out". Or he called "The aria - is missing" and sang the beginning of this aria."
Ha! I guess it says something about me that this is the first story I've heard about FW that actually strikes me as endearing, like I was all "aw, FW!" (Don't get me wrong, I really like the meeting his maker in uniform story, but I didn't have the visceral response to it that I do to this one.) Probably partially because I'd always thought he was totally against music!
(FW: finding a way to save money, look at Tall Men and enjoy music at the same time. Gotta respect that.)

Klepper in "Der Vater" makes a point of saying that he wasn't, and uses the Händel fondness as well, but I wasn't sure where this anecdote hailed from (only that "Der Thronfolger" uses it, too) before reading Nicolai. BTW, I'm now also reminded of Hervey's observation that G2 and FW were way too similar to ever get along, because of course G2 loved Händel (see Händel opera war with Fritz of Wales), though it certainly didn't occur to him to demand oboe arrangements performed by tall soldiers.
In the entertaining theatre play "Mögliche Begegnung der Herren Bach und Händel", which is about a fictional meeting between Bach and Händel during Händel's last visit to Saxony, they briefly discuss royal patrons and agree that "the King of Prussia" is far too miserly to work for; no specification whether they're talking about Fritz or FW.

You respond viscerally to music, I respond viscerally to the military. That checks out. :)
Also, I didn't know (or at least remember) this story in this much detail, but I did had encountered something like it, and I did know that he didn't totally hate music.
Re: Nicolai Volume 2: It's Antinous Time! (Also: FW, Music lover)
