Probably partially because I'd always thought he was totally against music!

Klepper in "Der Vater" makes a point of saying that he wasn't, and uses the Händel fondness as well, but I wasn't sure where this anecdote hailed from (only that "Der Thronfolger" uses it, too) before reading Nicolai. BTW, I'm now also reminded of Hervey's observation that G2 and FW were way too similar to ever get along, because of course G2 loved Händel (see Händel opera war with Fritz of Wales), though it certainly didn't occur to him to demand oboe arrangements performed by tall soldiers.

In the entertaining theatre play "Mögliche Begegnung der Herren Bach und Händel", which is about a fictional meeting between Bach and Händel during Händel's last visit to Saxony, they briefly discuss royal patrons and agree that "the King of Prussia" is far too miserly to work for; no specification whether they're talking about Fritz or FW.
