...that would explain so much, wouldn't it? He did write a couple of books I really like very much around that time (Pastwatch, in particular, I think is one of his finest works-- one of the very few books I can think of besides Octavia Butler's to have both a strong mother-daughter relationship and a not-ham-handed depiction of race relations, and only one annoying "Hey, let me tell you what I believe!" interlude) but it's all been a bumpy downhill slide since then. This book I can barely believe is by the same person.
