For Nest, I think I'm getting tripped up on whether the worldbuilding supports the world state the characters are in.
Yeah, I said in the post that I didn't like the characters rather than the worldbuilding, but the more I think about it I think I have a strong predilection towards characters that arise out of the worldbuilding, so to speak. Or maybe I only think so because it's so evidently the case in Tainted Cup? :) But also this is one of the strengths Ministry of Time as well -- the setup is odd, but the characters do arise out of the milieu of the past (Gore and the other time travelers) and the present/near-future (the narrator and the other bridges).
Hmm, I also wonder if I would have gotten further in Alien Clay if I'd read that one first? Idk.
