Unfortunately, there was then at Berlin a King who pursued one policy only, who deceived his enemies, but not his servants, and who lied without scruple, but never without necessity.

(from The King's Secret - by Duke de Broglie, grand-nephew of the subject of the book, Comte de Broglie, and grandfather of the physicist) )

Now there's a rabbit hole to the past, which reminds me not just of the original royal bro code (from Sachsens Glanz und Preussens Gloria) but also of how we collectively made mince meat of "In the Shadow of the Empress" by Nancy Goldstone. The particular highlights should really be collected for Rheinsberg so that if someone asks me again whether that book is any good, I can point them to something more easily to navigate.

Oh, and I keep wanting to mention this: Kaphengst's old palace, Meseberg, doesn't just serve as the house for state guests but also for government brainstorming hermit sessions. When the most recent of our volatile coalition government happened, one article said that surely, they must be sick by now of staring up to the ceiling and watching Prince Heinrich being welcomed to the Olymp of War Heroes ("Prinz Heinrich wird in den Olymp der Kriegshelden aufgenommen" being apparantly the title of the painting Kaphengst ordered for his main reception salon.

Lehndorff: He stole the idea from me! Only I did it much better and with more emotion instead of flattery when I had the Olympian Gods send a message to Heinrich to join them for his 30th birthday in my apartment and painted my wallpaper with phosphor messages in his honor! Bloody Cape Stallion!

I have added "how we collectively made mince meat of 'In the Shadow of the Empress' by Nancy Goldstone" as a Trello card to my to-do list for Rheinsberg, which means it might actually get done someday. That list keeps getting longer as Darth Real Life goes on, though. :( (Darth Real Life might finally be under control as of today, though we'll see.) But hey, I can take FS off it now! Go Selena.
