Last post, along with the usual 18th-century suspects, included the Ottonians; changing ideas of conception and women's sexual pleasure; Isabella of Parma (the one who fell in love, and vice versa, with her husband's sister); Henry IV and Bertha (and Henry's second wife divorcing him for "unspeakable sexual acts"). (Okay, Isabella of Parma was 18th century.)

Another question on titles

I'm pretty sure we've talked about this in salon before, and that I know the answer, but just to be safe: Let's say you had a knight (in Tudor England), let's call him Sir Smashum Uppe. (Sir Smashum is recent nobility, so I believe Uppe is actually his surname and not a placename.) For the most part, of course, when referring to him, one would call him Sir Smashum. I think a friend/reasonably close aquaintance (also titled) would refer to him as "Uppe," is that correct?

I also can't say for sure! Tudor England is before my period. But it sounds right to me.

BTW, I found a useful cheat sheet for titles for correct forms of address! ("Most of the information on this page comes directly from the 1932 edition of Black's Correct Form," which as an American who lives in a country that doesn't do peerages I Think is hilarious (that there have to be whole books on this stuff, because of course there have to be!)
