Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a huge revision -- I do still love Empire! And I'd have to go back to read, but I do think Martine thinks about some of these things more carefully in Empire than in Desolation. Just... I'm not sure how carefully she was thinking about all of them.
Oh, James Alan Gardner! I read some of his stories when I was younger, though I don't remember the League of Peoples. I haven't seen any of his books for ages, but I'll keep an eye out.
