OMG. That is hilarious and sad/horrible at the same time. As someone who does try to wriggle out of confrontation, I am simultaneously empathetic towards Algarotti and tooooootally see him going, "Sure, come to Italy sometime," politely, not actually thinking she'd take him up on it, and potentially carrying some of the blame. As you say.

It is nice she liked Italy, though :P
