I feel a little like a member under false pretences, since my kid is so well-behaved 3/4 of the time! (I understand that is often the case with high-functioning ASD girls.) But on the other hand, when I tell people at church (who have lived with her meltdowns for five years) their reaction is all, "Oh, so that's what it is," which was my reaction when the other ASD kid in our ward (congregation) was diagnosed several years back.

Yeah, my in-laws kept pooh-poohing my concerns when I raised them ("I'd love to have a kid who was as good at math as your kid, what are you worried about?") and my mom has... even less idea. My in-laws got educated once we got the diagnosis, but my mom is the sort who thinks that if I just discipline her enough that she would be fixed. (And it would probably work, to a certain extent, because of her personality, but... there are so many reasons why that's a terrible idea...)

I'm very hopeful that things will go well. Her teachers and I had blundered into some useful coping mechanisms last year, and it seems like we'll be able to build on those. Thanks!
