Yes, you are absolutely right, and I should have worded that differently -- have now changed it. Especially in light of Utah being a very different place, culturally; I don't know what it's like to live there, and I am not entirely sure I want to know, but I know that being Mormon in California is by most accounts a much more positive experience for someone like me (and like Linda) than in Utah. (And of course some of the changes she makes in e.g. church hierarchy are to make the mystery plot come out the way she wanted. It's not her fault that it's not the way I wanted it to come out. :) )

I've read Mira, Mirror and didn't notice the character validation thing then, but it's something I've only started to notice in the past couple of years. (Briefly, I was one of the betas for a novel draft which also went through beta with a fairly well-established writer -- who very kindly and thoroughly pointed out all the character validation that was rampant in that draft. Since then I've been rather more sensitive to it, even though I wasn't the author of that particular book!)
