HELLO CLEARLY FOLLOWING YOU WAS A GOOD IDEA FOR MORE REASONS THAN JUST LES MIS. Your thoughts and feels about this are really interesting! The dilemma between accessibility and awesome music is a tough one.
My denomination's music tradition is very different from anything you talk about in this post -- in all the churches I've attended, liturgy is not a thing that happens, and neither is having a regular choir. All our music is congregational singing! BUT. Mennonites as a whole have historically been really into the congregational singing, so it actually sounds gorgeous, and is sung in full four-part harmony. It's so much fun.
(but oh I WOULD SO SING LATIN POLYPHONY AS WELLLLLL)
