And you know, if he didn't open it at all, maybe he was thinking not only that it was above his paygrade and he wasn't touching this with a ten-foot pole, but also that if there *was* something incriminating, he didn't want to be accused of having tampered with it if Fritz instinctively trusts Algarotti over Leining. So I could see him just passing it on unopened to Fredersdorf and only finding the insert to Abbe de Prades when Fredersdorf sent it back.
