I don't think I had the faintest idea what was going on the first time I read it! I did the second time, I think (I don't know how many years separated my first and second read; I just have this dim memory of going "OH.") I think on first read I liked it because I liked Turtle, and I did get the "America the Beautiful" plotline, which I enjoyed, just not the underlying one.
