Ha, yeah, that was also my problem (you can see that it was because of this book that I bothered to learn a little at least about Richard III). Although all the stuff about how Byzantium is awful and that Hywel is trying to stop them is stated explicitly, I just glossed over it for a while -- but I think if I'd known more about Richard III I wouldn't have been quite so lost so much of the time and would have been able to pick up on things like that better?
I also found people's motivations very opaque.
In a John M. Ford book?! Say it's not so! /sarcasm Yeah, I still don't understand why people did what they did half the time (I'll get into that in the next posts).
I think the next post makes sense for talking about magic -- Chs 1-9 have a lot of the stuff about Hywel and (I think) the bit about faith, which I remember finding really striking even on first reading.
