...My three-year-old has just informed me that he wants to go to the Halloween party tonight as Posa.

Yes, the Marquis of Posa from Don Carlo.

I don't know whether I should be very pleased or very, very frightened.

(To be fair, I think all this means is that he wants to wear his green cape, and I seem to have successfully shunted this into being "Super Rabbit Boy" (the hero of some books we've been reading) but...)

ETA: Now he wants me to be the Prince. So I have a green cape too now. People are gonna be really confused...

:D I am also very amused :) Fortunately I was able to shunt him into telling people he was dressed as Super Rabbit Boy, which was rather less confusing (although still somewhat confusing, because Super Rabbit Boy isn't exactly a mainstream hero) than telling people he was the Marquis of Posa :)

No one asked me about my green cape, but one person asked me if we were matching intentionally!

My son at age three was obsessed with the Ring Trilogy, probably because we had watched and taped it off Great Performances. He wasn't allowed to have toy weapons but he craftily made himself a sword out of a coat hanger.

Alas, his interest in grand opera was not a lasting one.

Hee! That's awesome! It's too bad it didn't last. I don't know if A's interest will last either -- it's based on a single scene that involves swords, since both kids are very interested in swords. (We won't buy toy weapons ~~except for that one lightsaber that we couldn't resist~~ but E has made a sword out of cardboard, and usually they use pool noodles.) ...actually they might like the parts of the Ring that involve swords, hee.

Definitely the swishy capes are the most important thing! Also swords.

I've always thought it was completely unfair that the guys always get to have awesomely swishy capes in those lovely period Met productions and the women don't. Then I watched that Clemenza, and for a brief moment I thought maybe I should have worked way harder at singing lessons so I could have a Sesto or Annio cape someday, before I remembered that I am a soprano, not at all a mezzo, so even if I were any good (which, super unclear) I would never actually get to play Sesto or Annio :)

Okay, that is the most adorable thing ever. (Wait until he really gets into Don Carlo when he's older and then becomes inconsolable about his fate.)

Glad to hear that everything is going alright! You haven't posted in a while and I've been wondering how everything's going with you.

Yeah, he has only watched that one bit of the auto-da-fe (...not the end of the auto-da-fe, for obvious reasons) because he and E (my older one) like swords, and I think it very much appeals to him that Posa gets to take the sword. (He also likes to pretend to be the King, because Posa gives the King the sword!)

I've been busy! Mostly with RL (work, church, and kid commitments are ramping up and don't look to ramp back down until after the holidays) but... also with, uh, things to be discussed later :)

:D Happy Halloween! This is the first year I think he has understood Halloween, and it has been a super great experience for him. "CANDY!!"

Awww :D At least he didn't ask for a full costume because that would be a bitch to sew, or even find fabrics for.

Heh, yes. And I don't really sew, either. We were at Legoland a couple months back and we saw some kiddie knight costumes and I was SO tempted. But they were also expensive enough I wasn't tempted for long!

Although I do do chain maille every once in a while, and now Older Kid says she wants me to make her a chain maille helmet for *next* Halloween, so we'll see what happens with that. I've only done jewelry/chains, never actual sheets, so we'll see how it goes (and whether I can ever find time for it!), although it doesn't look too bad to do simple ones.
