so, it appears we're having a kid

January 22, more or less. A girl! We're alternating between being excited and apprehensive.

-Morning sickness really, really, really sucks. I didn't even have a particularly bad case of it. (However, I suspect I probably reacted worse to feeling queasy all the time than some. I really, really hate feeling nauseous. I REALLY hate it, to the extent that I had trouble working because of hating feeling this way, even though I wasn't really actively throwing up or anything, at least not more than once or twice a week or so. I mean, I still went to work and sat at my computer and in retrospect occasionally actually did things, and even went on business trips and pretended I was a useful member of society, but I was really lucky that there were no bad crunch deadlines during that time.)

-If one is going to have morning sickness, early summer in coastal California is really the way to do it. Not too hot, and fresh fruit (the only thing I wanted to eat, frequently) is abundant and tasty.

-There are way too many things you are not supposed to eat when pregnant.

-Second trimester is definitely way better. Actual energy! No nausea! Whew.

-I work for a totally awesome wonderful company. Three months off? Check. Three quarters time after? Check. Work from home a bit? Check.

-My mom is really miffed because my company has no paid maternity leave. Despite the fact that California will pay you for six weeks (not, admittedly, my full salary). Clearly she does not get out enough.

-I spend my time mainly in two cultural settings: one is work (culture: having a life outside the office? what?), and one is church, (culture: kids are the greatest thing since before sliced bread!!). Reaction of church people: SQUEE! Reaction of work people: Oh, hey, um, congratulations, yeah?

They both have their charm. I also had one engineer say, "Wow, that kid is going to be smart. But messed up." Which is true, at least the second part.

-The kid is definitely going to be messed up. For one thing-- this just came up this morning-- I have the feeling it (I mean, she!) is going to hear lots of nice little kiddie-appropriate songs like Lehrer's charming old Irish Ballad.

Congratulations and good luck!

...I hope that was supposed to be a joke?

The Irish Ballad is in a long tradition of horrible children's songs. Really think about the lyrics of "Rockabye Baby" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock-a-bye_Baby).

Hee. I should have unpacked that a little more. What he meant was "highly introverted, and probably learning how to program at an excessively early age at which most people would raise their eyebrows." Which, if it does not come to pass, won't be for lack of assiduous effort on our part :) (At least the programming part. It would certainly be good for her to be a bit more extroverted than we are...) Hopefully the kid will not be any more emotionally messed up than the rest of us!

Congratulations! [I'm an engineer, so I won't squee ;-) ]

I was brought up by a somewhat techie mom. She read Mathematics and the Imagination to me when I was a HS frosh. Simply enjoyed the experience at the time - looking back on it, it was representative of a unique upbringing which I appreciate more and more.

And I married a scientist who is hard at work on a report despite having retired a decade ago.

So, personally, I am rather in favor of technically-minded moms. I expect your kids will feel the same way. :-) (My daughter and son-in-law gave me a Lehrer CD with Irish Ballad on it. It is one of my favorites, too.)

Thanks! This makes me feel much better about the no doubt extremely lopsided upbringing the kid is going to get :) ("TV show? What's that? Lemme tell you about Fermat...") My mom did her college degree in math, so always insisted my sister and I should be able to do math, which in retrospect I really appreciate.

Awesome! Congrats! I get to do more baby-knitting! Going to the reunion next week?

[identity profile] charlie-ego.livejournal.com 2009-09-25 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :) Alas, no, somehow I got out of the loop and had no idea the reunion was happening until a couple of days ago, which was kind of too late to plan it. (It was really obnoxious, too, because I would totally have gone if I had known in time, and just last month I'd thought, "Huh, I guess they're not having a reunion, I haven't got any email or mail about it..." But maybe they did and I was too busy being sick or something; I have the impression a lot of things kind of got lost in the last couple of months.) But have a great time and I want a full report ;)

So -- colors/themes/etc.? I don't think they were terribly good about communicating about this one. I think I either looked at the website to see what was up or got an announcement through the FB alumni group -- I forget which happened first. I"m a little annoyed because the initial announcements were unclear about which parts cost, so I think I have paid for things I am not actually going to be able to do, but such is life.

do you mean baby themes or s&m themes? For the former, Dave would like to mention butterflies and flowers, "particularly where the butterfly is poised to stoop and pounce on the flower." Did I mention this kid is going to have problems? :) I like deep greens and blues and purples and don't like pastels.

How was the reunion? Any good gossip I should know about? :)

[identity profile] nolly.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I meant baby themes, and colors, yes.

[identity profile] nolly.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
As for the reunion, relatively light turn out this year; you weren't the only one who didn't hear about it in time. I dunno about gossip; we seem to have grown up, for the most part -- who'da thunk it?

[identity profile] charlie-ego.livejournal.com 2009-10-14 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's too bad... I mean, the light turnout, not the growing up :) Wow, that's weird! I still think of us as being in high school... but high school kids, it's true, look so little! Hope you still had fun?

Oh my gosh, that's super cool!

:) Thanks!
