I think one of the things that contributes to this is that whole thing where the book takes much longer than I think it should -- one would expect some steady character growth but because of the way Tchaikovsky has set it up, it's basically nonexistent for most of the book. Idk, probably not worth going back to read the entire thing, but I guess you could skip to the last 10% :)
