Back to the touching side: Leining first not wanting to worry Fredersdorf as he didn’t have good news to report but then reconsidering because no news will leave Fredersdorf (who of course will be worrying about Fritz & co.) at the mercy of panicked rumors is very human.

Yeah, I loved that detail, too - and there's even precedent, see this letter to Fritz from the Marquis D'Argens, October 1756: Mr Fredersdorf and I suffered unspeakable pain today, because letters from Berlin reported Your Majesty were wounded in an ambush and even captured! The reports were detailed enough to plunge us into despair. We immediately sent to Berlin to find the source and after seven hours of suffering, we finally learned that everything we'd been told, even written, was nothing but a web of lies.

So, you know, definitely worth getting him accurate information, even if it's bad.
