Still going! Still clearing Fritz's valet/chamberlain Fredersdorf's name from the calumny enshrined in wikipedia that he was dismissed for financial irregularities!
Lord Bristol was offered some capon, but refused it. When the King of Prussia asked him if he disliked the dish he answered: Yes, Sire: I have an aversion to all neutral animals."
HAHAHAHA
The Bishop tries to enlist help to convince young Frederick. Whom does he ask for help? Why, Frederick's sister Bess, of course, by now living comfortqably if scandalously with the Devonshires.
I might have said "WHAT??" out loud at this point :P
Dearest Elizabeth, the example he has before his eyes in and within his own family ought fully to determine him a gainst a love-match; it is so ominous a lottery, so pergnant with blanks, so improbable of success.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME, he wrote that to BESS??
The Bishop is very surprised that somehow, this letter doesn't convince Bess to intervene on his behalf to secure the Embassy and a Dukedom for her father.
Well, I guess I can see that, given that you WROTE THAT AT ALL.
"are you alive or dead? Or are you on a journey? or peadventure she sleepeth?
Oh now wait you're comparing her to BAAL? Classy, Bishop!
In conclusion: a good provider of sensational gossip, to be sure. But also self centred to an amazing degree without Fritzian traumatic childhood excuses, a deadbeat Dad, lousy husband and disloyal friend (except to William Hamilton).
Yes, for sure. Extremely entertaining to read about, extreme jerk to everyone around him. Except I guess William Hamilton. Well, I did enjoy this very much; thank you again for satisfying my curiosity :DD
ETA: for a bit more about Georgiana and Bess, check out these two articles on the movie "The Duchess" which compares it with the historical reality.
These were fascinating! Especially the bits about Georgiana being active politically. Also, me halfway through the second article: WAIT William Cavnendish was the brother of Henry Cavendish?? (Henry Cavendish was a famous scientist -- wikipedia tells me he did a bunch of chemistry, which I didn't know until today; I know him for his experiments in measuring the force of gravity.) But actually I think someone is confused -- probably me -- because from wikipedia-diving, Henry Cavendish actually appears to me to be a relatively distant cousin (it's too late at night for me to figure this out, but I think second cousin?) to William Cavendish, not Georgiana's brother-in-law.
It also seems to me that given that Bess stuck it out with Georgiana in Italy when the Duke wouldn't let her go home, maybe she did really like her after all and wasn't just manipulative? Though I suppose if the Duke was mad at both of them, maybe it wasn't exactly a willing sacrifice on her part.
Yes. I think Fritz has competition in the clueless letter to family members writing. (And like I said, Frederick Hervey has no traumatic childhood excuse.)

You're very welcome, and thanks to Mildred and yourself as well, otherwise I never would have learned about him, either, or put two and two together and realized he was Bess Foster's father.
Bess seduces Georgiana (or at the very least teaches her that sex, which Georgiana until now has only had the unpleasant marital type of, can be fun, with, err, demonstrations - just in the interest of education, of course!)

Just because I know mildred will care and correct me if I don't do it first, I looked it up this morning, and Georgiana's husband and Henry Cavendish, if the genealogy I got from Wikipedia is correct (which I assume it is), appear to be first cousins once removed :PP
Hahaha, under normal circumstances you would be right, but these days handwriting decipherment takes up all my time. No time to be a detective!
The good news is that my boss has approved me taking the first week of May off, so week after next, and I intend to use it to focus on handwriting. I had no intention of requesting time off until this project came along.
But lol at you remembering my recent post that indicates that I would care! :D
Ha! I will also say for the record that it wasn't the definition of nth cousins vs. cousins removed that was the problem (I figured out what those were once we started having regular family reunions and my cousins' kids wanted to know what relation I and my kids were to them), it was that at 11pm I didn't have either the brainpower to keep track of the relationships or the willpower to get paper and pencil and write them down :)

*Another* Biblical reference I didn't catch! As soon as I saw your comment, though, I knew what passage it was referring to--I just didn't make the connection on my own. (My Bible literacy is fairly weak, something I should remedy someday.)
(Henry Cavendish was a famous scientist -- wikipedia tells me he did a bunch of chemistry, which I didn't know until today; I know him for his experiments in measuring the force of gravity.)
Funny, gravity isn't ringing a bell for me, but I definitely know about his chemistry experiments!
thank you again for satisfying my curiosity :DD
And thank you for asking, I would not have looked for a bio on my own!

Two scenes from the movie The Duchess:
Bess and Georgiana (and the Duke) meet for the first time
Bess seduces Georgiana (or at the very least teaches her that sex, which Georgiana until now has only had the unpleasant marital type of, can be fun, with, err, demonstrations - just in the interest of education, of course!)
