On a less heartbreaking note, the most embarrassing thing Liselotte ever did to her son was slapping him in the face in public after she had heard a) Louis XIV wanted him to marry his illegitimate daughter and b) Philippe the future Regent had agreed. Remember, bastards marrying legitimate is a red button for True Royal Blood snobs like Liselotte or Saint-Simon. (Though Liselotte seems to have made an exception for her own half siblings whom she was very fond of and kept writing affectionate letters to - her favourite sibling, "Herzlieb Carl-Lutz", was one of those. )And this particular girl has been raised by Liselotte's arch enemy Madame de Maintenon whom she of course instantly suspected of having promoted the match, so there was that, too. Anyway, of course blaming Philippe the Younger was massively unfair, since if he'd said no to Uncle Sun King he could have kissed any chance for a career goodbye, but he seems to have forgiven Mom, who hadn't done something like this before or after.
