This is one of the few things I actually did know! It's a detail that (I think is where I saw it) crops up in a lot of historical fiction too, and I think even when I was a kid "Venetian glass" was a thing, I feel like I saw the phrase in things like mail-order catalogs occasionally. I didn't know about period glass eyes, though!
I went to Italy, including Venice, at the end of the century and it was definitely still really into glass, although at this point I imagine it's more touristy than anything else. I don't think I got any souvenirs, though. Probably was afraid of them breaking.
