Re: Keyserlingk, sensational gossip, and Royal Reader request

Excellent detective work, I say. And kudos to Klepper the novelist for correctly guessing FW did want Fritz to like them and that this was one of the criteria for picking them.

I suspect cerios is supposed to mean "serious"

Also "seriös", which isn't quite the same thing, but fits Rochow, and I think "salleter" als a Komperativ of salé is probably a good guess for FW's French-German mingling mind - saltier, more peppery.

"Bon ami" as a phrase also reminds me that in the instructions he wrote to AW's governor he emphasizes the guy was to be a friend to the prince (and the younger princes). Though of course the kind of friend who supervises every moment and ensures good Christianity along with being a good comrade, etc. Let's not forget, his mother made him read Fénelon's Telemaque hot from the printing press, so to speak. Not to mention that FW was kididng himself about equality at the Tobacco Parliament (where he wanted to be adressed only as "Colonel"). Male friendship was the most valued emotional tie for him as well as for his son(s).
