My shots in case anyone has problems linking to flickr:
Btw, Asprey says Fritz also abstained from meat for Lent, in deference to Austrian feelings; is that attested in either of these versions?
I haven't seen it, though it's possible I overlooked it or either Unger or Nicolai cut it.
He has to know all of his readers are going to take that as a sign of cowardice. And exaggerating for comic effect on how long Fritz kept fleeing, and saying he had almost made it back into Prussia/Brandenburg, is just emphasizing that
Okay, point taken, but given that at the point where he publishes this, Fritz has been in dozens more battles and has firmly established his macho warrior reputation, it's still not the same as accusing someone of cowardice for whom behavior in one particular battle makes or breaks a reputation.
Oh, god, this is hilarious.
Isn't it just? Those poor Tall Musicians, though! Fredersdorf so lucked out, clearly. If FW had known he could play the oboe (!!!!), he'd have been drafted to serve in FW's personal orchestra.
