You're baaaaaack omg yaaay welcome back!!

And yay more Mitchell material, that is of great interest to us! Does this mean you're actually subscribing to our posts and reading them as they come in? Or did you go back and catch up after your exams? Either way, we benefit greatly from your interest!

I noticed that in Tim Blanning's Fritz biography, he mentions some 'unpublished letters to a Lieutenant von der Groeben(...) [which] indicate that he continued to maintain intimate relations with young officers of his regiment'. In Frank Göse's newly released Friedrich Wilhelm biography he also mentions these letters but gives a few more details: "In any case, letters to a young lieutenant von der Groeben from the mid-1730s contain unambiguous - all the way down to anatomical details - allusions to a homoerotic relationship."

I was planning to look into this someday (new boyfriend?? :D) so thank you for your research! Hopefully we manage to get our hands on them someday.

Do we have a first name? I'm wondering if it might be this guy: right age, right rank, follows the Fritzian pattern of joining the army, then leaving it to do administrative stuff (or wanting to, but getting one's head cut off first), and ending a career "considered a skillful and hardworking official."

Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger, who released the recent and extremely long German-language biography of Maria Theresa in 2017,

Which [personal profile] selenak has read and is next on the list of the reading group consisting of me and [personal profile] cahn, as soon as we finish Lehndorff! It's sitting on the end table next to me right now. :D

I'm pleased she has another book coming out; maybe by then, I'll be able to read it without a translation.

I'm not sure if you all have looked through this overview published in 2018 using information from the archives in the Fritz box bill project

We had not, so thank you very much! It's good to have you back, and I hope it's a while before you have to leave again.

Chamberlain Anderson

Wait, wasn't he dismissed in disgrace too?

[personal profile] gambitten's state archive link says he was called Hans Heinrich von der Gröben, so not the wiki guy it seems.

By the way, two of those letters are actually at Trier, and while, sadly, not the ones with anatomical details, the second one has Fritz writing verses in German for him (!) and the poem seems to have three lines either censored or corrupted, so you are free to speculate what was in those lines :P

Very rough translation, because I'm not sure I entirely understood everything:

"Gentleman [cavalier] full of whims and other antics
even though I haven't gotten any written message
from your dear hands in a long time
telling me how you are and if
confusion keeps triumphing with you (??)
...
...
...
The noble red wine stings my brain today,
so that I even forget the course of the stars,
so closes the poet, wishes you to live well,
and gives you good night a thousand times."

Thank you! In that case, he does not appear to have been especially notable, except possibly to Fritz for certain anatomical features he possessed. ;)

Also thank you for checking Trier, Detective felis! That is indeed interesting that he writes to him in German and seems to have a personal and not just professional relationship (not that I can tell that from the Trier letters, good job, Preuss :P).

I'm not subscribed to the posts, because I'm not sure how often the emails would come in (I assume subscribing makes email notifications?) and I've got to keep it uncluttered for work reasons, but I have been checking in occasionally and reading the things that I missed! The part 2 for the things I've found should be up Monday night, since this Sunday I had a meeting about my lab project which I hadn't anticipated, so I haven't fully completed it. In my defense, I did say part two would "probably" be on Sunday, haha. I really appreciate everyone's responses, just wish I had more time to dive deep into the discussions!

A lot. :D

Hmm. Is there a reason you're using your work email for DW? I and I suspect most people use a personal account, and some of us even use fandom accounts. Gmail accounts are free!

But if checking in works better for you and you don't want to be spammed all the time, that's fine too. It *is* a lot of email notifications.

In my defense

No need for a defense! This is a non-judgmental, very laid-back place with no deadlines. If there were deadlines, none of us would be in a position to throw stones about missing them. :) We're happy to see you whenever you have time, doing whatever you have time for. (One of the best parts about salon, for me, is getting to pick and choose the extent and nature of your involvement, unlike work or school, where you have a commitment and you have to see it through to the end, with all the boring parts as well as the fun parts. Only fun parts here, and only as you have time!)
