I once lost about 60 pages I had to rewrite from scratch and shall never know whether the first version wasn't better, so I know how you feel. I also can see what you mean by the sketch being more like the Pesne portrait, but consider: the only other portrait of Fredesdorf I could find (the one from this article, which shows him older, presumably a lot of illnesses later) looks quite different from Pesne's painting, but when I looked at your version, I suddenly could see the commonalities, and how the young man in Pesne's painting aged into the other one. So you caught the essential Fredersdorf, clearly!

Also it's a good picture and I support the use of watercolour for Mildred's story illustration.

Watercolour it is! At last, a reason to use the fancy paper I've got lying around
