Definitely canon. We knew that from the divorce proceedings and the bitching about each other and the not able to let each other go afterwards already. :) Seriously, though, golden quote.

After coquetting for so many years, marriage was the necessary end.

See, Voltaire isn't a tease, Voltaire puts out! Incidentally, Pleschinski in his editorial comments in his translation of their letters says at one point "after flirting for so many, isn't it time for a rendez-vous?"

BTW, this clearly makes Valory Voltaire's very reluctant divorce lawyer. Fredersdorf is Fritz' first divorce lawyer who isn't reluctant at all because he does not need all the Voltaire drama in his life with Fritz, he truly doesn't, and Wilhelmine is the second lawyer hired to smooth things over and arrange for actual talking terms.
