Clearly my purpose in life is now revealed: it is to encourage mildred_of_midgard and selenak to talk to me about Frederick the Great and associated/tangential European history. I am having such a great time here! Collating some links in this post:

Wait, are you saying that you didn't realize it was real even after both of us had independently mentioned it to you, not just after my original long-ago allusion to this anecdote? That's hilarious. (I mean, since mine was long ago and in strikethrough and in a very unrelated discussion*, I can imagine you had long since forgotten about it by the time we got to Elisabeth Mara, but...Oh, Fritz.)

* Which also contains an allusion to the suckiest condolence letter of all times.

Also, selenak, that also contains a reference to the Heinrich-Friedrich-Marwitz (different Marwitz) lust triangle, and I am dying to know if you know the story behind that, because I've read contradictory versions from sources I don't trust. And also, the name Marwitz spells bad news for the Hohenzollern siblings in their love and sex lives, apparently.

Yes, I only half-remembered your first reference, in the sense that when selenak said it it sounded vaguely familiar but I had totally forgotten where it occurred. But I think in both cases I thought you were just riffing off his love of dogs :)


...I am totally here for learning more about the Heinrich-Friedrich-Marwitz love triangle (more than is already in the linked post, that is, which is already hilarious).
