My elementary school (which went through 6th grade) had one queen bee, I, who had one sidekick, N, in my class of 50. Some people cared. Some didn't. I was at the bottom of the social pecking order and still had three female friends, and a couple of male friends until we hit fourth grade and boys and girls felt they weren't allowed to be friends across the gender divide anymore. It was really clear to me that I and N would never give me the time of day. It was also clear to me that I had no real reason to care, since my friends were still my friends and there was no outright bullying.
My high school (grades 7 through 12) had 250 people per class, and quite a lot of social intermingling among the 1500 students as all the clubs and publications were open to all students. There was much more nuance to the social groups than it sounds like this book covers. And it was a magnet school with a diverse population in a large city, so social groups were more like "those guitar-playing kids who hang out in the second-floor hallway" and "the members of the Asian Christian Society" than jock/nerd or what have you.
