I did read it and I can totally see where you are coming from. I guess I chose to read it as a metaphor of books saving us, even in this world... Which is not necessarily what the author meant to convey, but which I think is a possible interpretation of a necessarily-compressed short story. Once you expand it to a novella, it's a little harder to interpret it that way :)
