My deal with BEEK is that it came out, and I read it, when I myself was a 15-year-old blonde pigtailed girl in love with Holmes--the Mary Sue really *was* me, and older men had never squicked me. In fiction, anyway. I found myself rather disappointed in the overt romance at the end of MREG, and it put me off for a few years.
I don't know why. It wasn't that I objected to the romance so much--I even kind of cheered that scene. But I lost interest when it wasn't about "how do we fit together?" and became "how we fit together."
