Ha! Well, and yes, most (not all, but the vast majority) of the interesting magic-pedagogy stuff was in the first third.

I did like The Just City quite a lot, but much more in a Thought Experiment sort of way than in a novel sort of way. It was certainly very different than Farthing, and didn't pull any expectation tricks at all. Hmm; I should maybe look up King's Name and Tooth and Claw, which I've heard other people say good things about as well. (I also am curious about Among Others; I suspect that it's the sort of book I would have loved a lot as a younger person, and am probably too old to read now.)
